Miaow: A Cat Zine

I’m excited to share a charmingly cozy and delightfully fluffy murder mystery story with Miaow: A Cat Zine. All proceeds from this digital zine will be donated to RAPS Cat Sanctuary, and preorders are open until September 5.

The story I contributed to the zine, “Angus and Peaches Get Away with Murder,” is about two cats who do exactly what the title suggests, but it’s also about two pairs of humans – the two women who benefit from a wealthy man’s death, and the two freelance detectives who investigate the incident. As much as I appreciate lone-wolf genius criminals, I thought it would be fun to write a story in which every character conspires in the murder in some fashion.

The two nameless detectives are modeled on Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, whom I’ve brought forward into the twentieth century. Something I’ve always admired about Sherlock Holmes is his strong sense of compassion, which occasionally overrules his sense of justice. There are a number of cases (“A Scandal in Bohemia” is my favorite) in which he allows the person who committed a crime to get away with it if he believes this will be the best outcome. I really enjoyed writing the scene in this story where the Holmes character just kind of shrugs and says, “What are you going to do, try a cat for murder?”

What he doesn’t know is that Angus and Peaches are unrepentant fiends, and that they would happily get away with murder again. I love all cats on this earth, but I truly believe that this is the sort of creature they are. Cats are all tiny little devils, and that’s one of the many things I admire about them.

I spent part of my childhood in rural Georgia in an old farmhouse that my mother went into bankruptcy to refurbish and remodel. Along with antique furniture, my mother collected stray cats, and at several points we had more than two dozen roaming around the house and yard.

I know that living in an historic farmhouse filled with expensive furniture and cats sounds like a dream come true for many people, and presumably this was the case for my mother. For me, however, it was extremely uncomfortable. I could never sleep properly, and I used to have nightmares about the cats eating each other and merging into giant mega-cats with far too many legs.

I don’t have anything against cats, and I’d like to adopt one of my own one day, but for the time being I’m happy being a dog person.

My Mother’s Cats

My first zine, which I put together in the spring of 2014, was made with a single sheet of copy paper and a construction paper cover. It had eight pages with simple illustrations of my mother’s cats.

My mother has (and has always had) twenty cats. When I went home for Christmas in 2013, I took pictures of them in an attempt to learn their names. I wasn’t successful, but the photos turned out to be useful references.

This was a fun zine, but I don’t think I’ll make any more of them. I no longer have access to a photocopy machine, and using scissors and a glue stick to create the cover by hand doesn’t seem as exciting and creative to me now as it did five years ago.

I’m thinking of making another zine with actual photographs, though. Caring for twenty cats may seem extreme, but my mother is very good at it. All of her cats are gorgeous, and they’re very photogenic.
